AI demand strains chip supply as memory pressures grow
AI-driven demand is tightening semiconductor supply chains and influencing chip architecture and manufacturing investment, according to TechInsights’ 2027 Outlook Report. The industry research platform identifies five significant trends reshaping the market, including a shift in memory demand as AI rapidly depletes supplies of high-bandwidth memory (HBM).
Advanced packaging is becoming increasingly important, while semiconductor manufacturing emissions are projected to reach a record high by 2027. Rising memory prices could also make cost-conscious consumers a more influential force in market dynamics, adding another pressure alongside demand for AI infrastructure.
Company developments reflected continued investment in that infrastructure. Marvell Technology is in advanced talks for an $83 billion acquisition of Lumentum, while NVIDIA announced expanded collaborations with Oracle, Schneider Electric, and Meta. Trading was mixed: Marvell fell 13.2% to $218.34, while NXP Semiconductors rose 5.7% to $266.00 after strong quarterly earnings and guidance for revenue growth of 15% year-over-year.
