OpenAI claims scientific advances across mathematics, computing and physics
OpenAI announced breakthroughs in mathematics, computer science and physics, saying its AI independently discovered and proved complex scientific theories rather than merely assisting researchers. The company said the mathematics and computer science proofs have been formally verified using Lean and that the proof materials are publicly available.
In mathematics, OpenAI said the model proved the local smoothing conjecture for all dimensions, resolving the Kakeya conjecture and the Stein restriction conjecture. In computer science, it claimed to have refuted the exponential time hypothesis, a result that could suggest the possibility of faster algorithms.
In physics, the model proposed rigorous mathematical existence proofs for quantum chromodynamics and Yang-Mills theory, addressing one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. Those findings are under review by experts, including Nobel laureates in physics. Despite the claimed formal verification of the other results, the findings still require independent confirmation by the academic community.
