Sony transfers XR patents to Meta
Sony has reportedly transferred 43 United States patents related to virtual, augmented, and mixed reality hardware to Meta. The patents cover technologies including head-mounted displays and XR glasses, reflecting work Sony pursued from 2010 up until 2022.
The transfer took place between June and September this year and is expected to support Meta’s internal hardware efforts. The wider portfolio extends beyond the United States, with a total of 419 global patents slated for transfer.
Around 180 patents out of these 419 are held in the United States, while the remaining 239 were filed in markets where Sony has research and development operations, including Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and other regions.
