Carney launches national AI council

·1 min read

Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched the Prime Minister’s National Council on Artificial Intelligence to provide independent, practical advice on Canada’s AI transformation. The council will bring together public and private stakeholders to advise on the government’s AI for All strategy, including adoption, national champions and sovereign AI infrastructure.

The council is expected to examine AI safety, democratic protection, governance and oversight while helping generate ideas, partnerships, AI-focused missions and initiatives. Its members include researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, public servants and international experts, with Patrick Pichette serving ex officio.

AI for All is built around building trust in AI, expanding opportunity for Canadians and strengthening sovereign control over critical capabilities. The strategy targets an additional $200 billion of economic growth, 250,000 new AI-related jobs over the next five years, higher AI adoption from just over 12% to 60% by 2034 and up to 90,000 AI-related jobs and work placement opportunities for young Canadians.
