Microsoft folds Office into Copilot in major work app overhaul

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described Copilot as a “new OS for work that spans every model, every form factor, and every task,” positioning the product as a broader workplace layer rather than a standalone chat tool. The update merges Autopilot, Code, Home, and Office into one Copilot app, with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint now built directly into the experience.

The redesigned app also includes Copilot support inside Teams and a new feature called Today, which pulls relevant information from across Microsoft 365 without requiring users to ask first. The shift suggests Microsoft wants Copilot to operate proactively across the workday, surfacing context and tools as needed.

Microsoft did not frame Copilot as part of the Windows 11 operating system, following a rough user reception to its earlier “agentic OS” messaging for Windows. The company has explored a Copilot-centered operating system internally under the codename Project Aion, though that effort reportedly dates back to 2024 and its current status is unclear.
