MIT AgeLab study leads to voice-controlled care startup

Don Yansen, an MIT-trained electrical engineer and serial entrepreneur, came to the MIT AgeLab for a study on technology in caregiving for older adults after retiring to care for his wife. Conversations with participants highlighted a persistent usability gap: many older adults struggle with modern cell phones and devices such as the Apple Watch.

Kiwi Health, founded in October 2024, sells a wristband designed to be controlled primarily by voice rather than screens. Wearers can set reminders, make calls, send texts, and share health data, while AI interprets commands and accounts for age-related changes in speech. The device also measures health metrics and automatically alerts caregivers to falls, with the goal of helping seniors live more independently and safely.
