Nvidia pushes into PCs with RTX Spark chip
Nvidia is entering the PC processor market with the RTX Spark Superchip, a combined microprocessor and graphics chip designed for AI-era laptops and desktops. CEO Jensen Huang said the chip will appear in machines from major PC makers including Dell Technologies Inc. and Lenovo Group Ltd., running Microsoft’s Windows for Arm operating system.
The product was developed with Taiwan’s MediaTek Inc. and will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using its 3N process technology. Nvidia said the design will pair a central processing unit with up to 20 computing cores and a Blackwell-generation graphics processor with 6,144 cores, sharing built-in memory to better handle large AI models and high-end games.
The move gives Nvidia another route into AI computing beyond data centers, where its chips already dominate. It also challenges Intel and AMD’s long-running hold on the PC market, while adding pressure on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon push into Windows machines. Nvidia said the first RTX Spark laptops will target premium buyers, with later versions expected to support a broader range of prices.
Nvidia remains tied to Intel through a separate partnership announced in September, when it agreed to invest $5 billion in Intel and co-develop chips for PCs and data centers. The company said performance comparisons with rival devices will be released closer to when the new machines go on sale.
