WTO says AI could lift global trade if digital gaps close
AI could increase the value of cross-border flows of goods and services by nearly 40% by 2040, according to a World Trade Organization report. The projected gains are linked to higher productivity and lower trade costs, but the WTO says inclusive growth will depend on policies that close the digital divide, improve workforce skills and preserve an open, predictable trading environment.
William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, called the findings a call to action for businesses and policymakers. He said the report identifies a possible AI premium for global economic growth of 12-13% and goods export growth of up to 37% by 2040.
Bain said AI can support exporters by reducing red tape, speeding up journey times and cutting customs delays. He also highlighted AI services as a highly exportable growth opportunity for the UK, while warning that tariff and technical barriers must be addressed and electronic transmission of services should remain tariff-free.
