UW team selected for critical minerals data project

A collaborative team from the University of Wyoming, the University of Nevada-Reno and the University of Idaho has been selected for funding through the Intermountain Critical Minerals Research Launchpad to advance critical minerals technologies using AI and machine learning.

The project, called “Critical Mineral Intelligent Data Observatory (CM-IDO),” will create a federated knowledge base for critical mineral documents and data from Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada. The system is designed to perform optical character recognition, catalog, extract, structure, link and display available materials in an AI-ready format.

Project participants include Tyler Brown of the UW School of Energy Resources, Alathea Davies of the UW School of Computing, Luke Sheneman of the University of Idaho, Simon Jowitt of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, and Claudio Berti of the Idaho Geological Survey. The yearlong effort began this month and is expected to support future external proposals for enhancements and continued operation.
