US restricts foreign access to Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5

·1 min read

The Trump administration has ordered Anthropic to suspend foreign nationals’ access to its top AI models, citing national security authorities. The restriction applies to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, including use by foreign nationals inside and outside the United States and by foreign national employees at Anthropic.

Anthropic said the order forces it to abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers to ensure compliance, while access to its other models will not be affected. The company said the government provided only verbal evidence of a potential narrow, non-universal jailbreak and disputed that such a finding justified recalling a commercial model.

The move deepens tensions between Anthropic and the White House. The company is already suing the administration after being placed on a supply chain blacklist over its refusal to allow US military use of its AI models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems. Analysts cited in the report warned that the restriction could disrupt research institutions, companies using Claude software, and foreign workers in the US, while Anthropic said it believes there has been a misunderstanding and is working to restore access.
