US lifts export ban on Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5

The US government has lifted export restrictions on Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after the company agreed to new safeguards around security risks. Anthropic said it will begin restoring access on Wednesday after the Department of Commerce notified the company that the restrictions had been removed.

The models were suspended on 12 June over concerns that they could be used by hackers to exploit weaknesses in computer systems. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote in a letter seen by the BBC that Anthropic has addressed the risks, agreed to proactively detect and address security issues, collaborate on future releases, and alert the government to malicious activity.

Fable 5 is aimed at consumers and is described as capable of deep reasoning and complex independent tasks. Mythos 5 is built for businesses and cybersecurity experts, with capabilities that can identify and exploit vulnerabilities in computer code. Both models were released on 9 June.

Anthropic previously said US authorities had not identified specific concerns when ordering the suspension worldwide. The company said the government believed it had found a way to bypass, or jailbreak, Fable 5, but disputed that a narrow potential jailbreak justified recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people.
