UK venture funding heads for record as AI deals surge

·1 min read

UK venture capital investment reached £14.4 billion during the first half of 2026, putting the market on course to surpass the record of £26 billion set in 2021. PitchBook data reported by the Financial Times points to strong late-stage activity, particularly across software, pharma and biotechnology, with AI deals helping cement the UK’s position as Europe’s leading market.

Overseas investors, especially from the US, have been central to the surge as emerging growth companies in the UK attract global capital. PitchBook ranks the UK third in the global AI sector behind the US and China, supported by a large AI ecosystem, engineering networks and a concentration of talent around London.

Domestic participation remains limited, with UK investors accounting for just 11 per cent of funding. Demand for venture capital trusts has weakened after a 2025 reduction in upfront tax relief on initial funding from 30 to 20 per cent, while UK venture capital fundraising fell to £2 billion in 2025, below the £7.5 billion annual average recorded in the eight years to 2024.

Exit conditions have also improved despite a quiet UK IPO market in 2026. PitchBook identified the UK as a key hub of IPO candidates and noted that the broader European backlog has almost halved.
