UK Thinktank Calls for Relaxing AI Copyright Laws to Preserve Transatlantic Relations

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has issued a warning to the UK government, suggesting that strict censorship and copyright laws concerning artificial intelligence could jeopardize the nation’s relationship with the United States. The think tank argues that such regulations could impede AI research progress and create economic and national security risks for the UK.

According to the institute, insisting on licensing for copyrighted materials in AI models would be impractical, as it might push AI development to regions with looser regulations. The report criticizes the notion that knowledge workers should operate under the same restrictions as commercial AI, suggesting that innovation requires access to broad and unrestricted data.

The report also advocates for the creation of a Centre for AI and Creative Industries in the UK. This center would foster collaboration between the technology and creative sectors, aiming to establish the nation as a leading hub for AI innovation. Despite opposition from some creatives who fear such relaxations could hurt individual rights, the report maintains that adapting copyright laws is crucial to remain competitive globally.
