UK leaders overestimate AI failure diagnosis, Virtana finds

A Virtana survey of 238 UK enterprise decision-makers found that 53% of organisations are running AI infrastructure they cannot fully observe. The research also found that 59% of UK executives believe their organisation can automatically identify the root cause of an AI workload failure across systems, while only 34% of infrastructure engineers agree.

The resulting 25-point gap is wider than the 17 points reported in the United States. UK enterprises are also scaling AI faster, with 59% doing so across teams compared with 54% in the US, but only 26% described AI workload performance as highly predictable.

Operational pressure is rising as 75% of UK enterprises use automated alerting as the first response to AI workload failures, yet only 47% can identify root cause automatically across all infrastructure domains. Governance risks are also mounting, with 39% deprioritising security and compliance reviews while AI oversight expands under UK GDPR, emerging AI Act obligations, and sector-specific scrutiny.
