Tsinghua professor’s stealth LLM startup reaches $1.4 billion valuation
A stealth-mode Chinese LLM startup founded in February 2026 by a Tsinghua University professor has reached a valuation exceeding $1.4 billion after raising $400 million across three funding rounds. Tencent is among the investors, reinforcing the role of China’s largest technology groups in financing early frontier AI ventures before they disclose products or technical details.
The company has not publicly revealed its name, model architecture, product plans or technical differentiation. Its rapid rise extends Tsinghua University’s role as a source of commercial AI talent, following Tsinghua-linked ventures such as Zhipu AI, also known as Z.ai, Baichuan and other labs that have moved from academic research into frontier model development.
The funding comes as Chinese AI labs face tighter access to advanced chips because of export controls, pushing many companies toward efficiency gains rather than raw computing scale. The valuation also lands in the same week U.S. Representative Ro Khanna asked Chinese labs including DeepSeek and Moonshot to join a cross-border agreement pacing frontier AI development, highlighting the gap between fast-moving private capital and slower policy coordination.
