Suchi Saria’s sepsis tool earns TIME100 AI 2026 recognition

Suchi Saria, founder and CEO of Bayesian Health and a professor at Johns Hopkins University, has been named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in AI for 2026 for her work on early sepsis detection. Her focus is personal as well as clinical: she began turning her academic research into a hospital system after losing her nephew to sepsis in 2017.

The AI system analyzes patient information for patterns that may indicate sepsis risk before the condition is clear to clinicians. Sepsis can worsen quickly, and earlier identification can give doctors more time to intervene when infection begins to trigger dangerous deterioration.

The technology was developed through research at Johns Hopkins and later commercialized by Bayesian Health. In May 2026, the US Food and Drug Administration cleared the system as an early warning tool for sepsis. Johns Hopkins reported that it can identify sepsis hours earlier than doctors and that its use was associated with a reduction in deaths of nearly 20%.

Earlier research involving more than 764,000 patient encounters found that timely use of the platform was associated with an 18.2% relative reduction in mortality. The work highlights a practical model for AI in healthcare: helping clinicians notice subtle signals across vital signs, lab results and clinical notes sooner.
