Stargate UK stalls amid questions over AI investment claims
Stargate UK was promoted as OpenAI’s flagship project in Britain and a centerpiece of American-British technology cooperation around Trump’s visit. The plan centered on a 30 billion data center in North Tyneside, but the project has been portrayed as more of a political announcement than a construction-ready development.
OpenAI and infrastructure partner Nscale had not meaningfully engaged with local authorities at the key site, according to the account. Of the promised 30 billion, only 10 billion was tied to a real Blackstone data center, while the remaining 20 billion was described as potential investment based on the estimated funding needed to fully use the 1.1 GW site.
OpenAI paused the effort in April, citing costly energy and regulatory uncertainty. The setback exposed a gap between Britain’s ambition to become an AI superpower and the practical infrastructure, energy and policy conditions needed to support large-scale projects.
