Roblox faces Senate scrutiny over child safety claims

Roblox is under renewed scrutiny from the US Senate over its handling of child safety, following earlier criticism that the platform failed to protect underage users from predatory behavior. The company had introduced new safeguards and added age verification for chat access in an effort to separate adult and underage users.

In a letter from John Hawley, Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, the Senate accused Roblox of prioritizing ‘revenue and engagement metrics over the safety and well-being of our children.’ The letter said alleged criminal activity on the platform ‘warrants congressional scrutiny.’

The Senate cited Roblox metrics saying the company reported 65,381 instances of suspected child sexual exploitation in 2025, involving allegations ranging from kidnapping and sexual assault to bribery and extortion intended to pressure underage individuals into producing explicit materials. Roblox has until August 31, 2026, to respond to the allegations and submit requested documentation.
