Reddit turns to LLMs to detect spam bots

·1 min read

Reddit has deployed LLM technology to counter a surge in AI-generated spam, using more advanced detection systems against content that increasingly resembles human writing. The platform says older filters were effective against simple, repetitive spam, but modern generative tools have made automated posts harder to identify.

Reddit says it blocks nearly 23 million spam views every day and identifies over 25,000 new spam posts and comments. Its updated systems are designed to catch subtle and coordinated inauthentic behavior patterns, including attempts to artificially promote topics or run covert advertising campaigns. The company says user exposure to spam fell by 20 percent compared with the last quarter of last year.

The same approach is also being applied to hate speech and other rule-breaking content, though experts warn that automated moderation should remain paired with human oversight. While YouTube, Meta, Instagram and TikTok are taking varied approaches to AI-generated content, Reddit is emphasizing user safety and cleaner platform activity.
