OpenAI pairs GPT-6 Astra launch with Europe policy agenda

OpenAI Global Affairs Europe is tying the launch of GPT-6 Astra to a wider push for updated AI policy in Europe. The company described GPT-6 Astra as its most intelligent and aligned model yet, and said an internal model significantly more capable than GPT‑6 Astra proposed a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, unresolved for roughly 90 years. OpenAI said new capabilities should come with stronger safeguards, shared rules and independent oversight.

The company highlighted ChatGPT for Teens, an experience for users under 18 focused on learning, safety and parental involvement. Features include Study Mode updates, stronger default protections, more frequent break reminders, clearer reminders that ChatGPT is AI and expanded parental notifications covering signs of potential violence and eating disorders. OpenAI also committed $5 million to independent research into how generative AI affects young people aged 13-17, with applications open until 6 October 2026.

OpenAI also detailed European cybersecurity and media initiatives. Through Daybreak, it is helping trusted defenders access cyber-specialised models, including work with ENISA and the EU AI Office, while CERT Polska identified six vulnerabilities in MikroTik RouterOS with support from GPT-5.5-cyber and GPT-5.6-sol models. In Ukraine, OpenAI is partnering with AIRPPU and WAN-IFRA to support independent newsrooms, while separate grants will provide $1 million in funding and up to $1 million in API credits for policy research projects that will run for six months, with results reported in 2027.
