OpenAI math claim raises credit and access questions

OpenAI announced that its agents solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the Millennium Prize Problems selected by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. The problem concerns whether equations used to describe fluid flow can break down under some conditions, and a solution carries a one million dollar prize that OpenAI says it does not plan to claim.

The announcement was quickly overshadowed by accusations involving NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic employee Levent Alpöge, who had used publicly available models from OpenAI and Anthropic to make progress on a simplified version of the problem. Buckmaster said OpenAI employees offered a path in which OpenAI would publish its solution after his work appeared, or a collaboration that excluded Alpöge because of his Anthropic affiliation. OpenAI denied that its agents or employees accessed the pair’s transcripts.

The dispute highlights a broader shift in mathematics as frontier AI companies gain access to tools and budgets far beyond academia. OpenAI said the result required running about 10,000 agents concurrently, at a cost of millions of dollars. Mathematicians quoted in the piece warned that opaque AI-driven breakthroughs could bypass the mistakes, partial results, and shared methods that often drive mathematical progress.
