Netflix used generative AI in roughly 300 titles
Netflix said roughly 300 titles on its platform used generative AI, mostly in post-production, as it leans on the technology to produce higher-quality work more quickly and at lower cost. The company cited The American Experiment, Glory, and Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri as examples that used AI for enhanced crowds, historical battle sequences, and worldbuilding establishing shots.
Co-CEO Ted Sarandos told investors that The American Experiment includes 17 minutes of “AI-enhanced footage” produced “twice as fast and at half the cost of previous options.” He said some productions otherwise would have skipped key shots because they could not fit within budgets or production schedules. Netflix has also used AI on The Eternaut, acquired Ben Affleck’s AI startup, created an AI animation studio, and is using the AI-generated voice of Gene Wilder in Wonka’s The Golden Ticket.
Netflix reported earning $12.56 billion over the past few months and said it remains on track to double its ad revenue to $3 billion. The company pushed back on engagement concerns, saying subscribers watched over 97 billion hours, up 2 percent year over year, and said it will now publish its What We Watched report once per year instead of twice.
