Microsoft backs Mistral’s European compute push

Microsoft has expanded its partnership with Paris-based Mistral AI through a multibillion-dollar commitment to compute infrastructure in Europe. The deal will finance Mistral’s growing GPU base on the continent while avoiding a new equity stake, after earlier EU scrutiny examined whether Microsoft’s 2024 investment gave it “decisive influence” over the startup.

Mistral will add thousands of NVIDIA’s latest Vera Rubin chips to its European capacity. Azure customers will gain access to Mistral’s French data centres, while Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models will be made available inside Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio. Microsoft president Brad Smith framed the agreement around European control over data, operations and digital future, while Mistral chief executive Arthur Mensch said the partnership would bring its models to enterprises and public institutions “at global scale.”

The partnership gives Microsoft a European model provider for regulated customers, and gives Mistral capital and chips as compute becomes a constraint. Mistral is targeting one gigawatt of compute by 2030 under its Mistral Compute programme, with an interim goal of up to 200 megawatts by 2027. It is reportedly discussing a raise of around €3bn at a €20bn valuation and has secured $830m in debt to build a data centre near Paris, leaving regulators to assess whether the new structure reinforces sovereignty or dependence.
