London surgeons use AI in brain tumour operation

Neurosurgeons in London have carried out the world’s first successful AI-assisted operation to remove a brain tumour, according to health officials. The procedure at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, part of University College London hospitals NHS foundation trust, saved the sight of Rhys Hibbert, a 48-year-old man from Bedfordshire.

The AI system analysed live camera footage during surgery and helped identify critical anatomy near the 11mm (0.4in) tumour on Hibbert’s pituitary gland, including nerves and blood vessels that needed to be avoided. Surgeons stayed in full control while the technology colour-coded important structures to support safer navigation in a tightly packed area where small errors can have serious consequences.

Hibbert had been diagnosed in 2024 and initially managed without surgery, but worsening symptoms included severe hormone imbalance and vision problems. After the operation, he said his vision was clear, and he was able to walk independently without glasses or sticks within a week before returning to work.
