Intel’s 14A node draws review from major chip buyers
Intel’s next-generation 14A process is being evaluated by Amazon, Apple, AMD, Google, Tesla, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Qualcomm, according to Piper Sandler. Tesla is already the first publicly confirmed external customer, with Elon Musk saying in April that the company will use 14A to produce AI chips at its Terafab campus in Austin, Texas.
The node has shown technical progress, with defect density falling to 0.5 in June 2026 and Intel targeting 0.1-0.2 by Q1 2027. Intel CFO David Zinsner said the improvement rate is the company’s fastest since at least the 22nm era in 2012. The process uses PowerDirect backside power delivery, RibbonFET 2 transistors, and High-NA EUV scanners from the start of its design.
Demand is being shaped by expectations that TSMC capacity will remain tight through at least 2028, alongside U.S. pressure to bring chip manufacturing onshore. Intel raised approximately $15 billion in August and later increased the size to $20 billion, a move interpreted as preparation for potential Fab 62 expansion. Intel plans 14A risk production in Q2 2027 and formal volume production in Q1 2028.
