Intel maps a phased path to post-quantum security
Quantum computing is framed as a gradual security shift rather than an overnight break in enterprise encryption. A Global Risk Institute survey in late 2024 asked 32 experts when a quantum computer could break a 2048-bit RSA key within 24 hours, with averaged estimates pointing to a 50-50 probability by 2040. The immediate concern is “harvest now, decrypt later” activity against data that must remain confidential beyond 10 years.
U.S. National Security Systems guidance is presented as a planning signal for the commercial market. New acquisitions must support CNSA 2.0 requirements from January 2027, implementation for most new systems is required by 2031, and 100% adoption is targeted by 2035.
Intel says its role is to provide transition infrastructure, including quantum-safe memory encryption in the Intel Xeon 6 Processor using AES-256, microcode signing, accelerators, optimized libraries, and CPU instructions. The recommended enterprise roadmap starts with cryptographic asset discovery, prioritizes long-lived data and trust anchors, and designs systems for algorithm changes across hardware, firmware, software, and connected services.
