Gemini hits 950 million monthly users as Google reshuffles DeepMind

·1 min read

Google said the Gemini app has reached 950 million monthly users, underscoring growing adoption of its consumer AI tools as the company reorganizes Google DeepMind. Gemini is being integrated across AI Mode and AI Overviews, while Flash is in high demand and Gemma models have surpassed 900 million downloads.

Demis Hassabis will move into the newly created role of Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, with a focus on long-term AGI research and continued work with Isomorphic Labs. Koray Kavukcuoglu, a DeepMind veteran of 13 years, will become SVP of Google DeepMind and oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and Gemini app and developer teams.

Google is also backing a new independent public benefit corporation from Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat after Dean’s departure from Google after 27 years. The venture will focus on discoveries in machine learning, science, and engineering, use Google cloud infrastructure, and collaborate with Google on machine learning systems and infrastructure research.
