G20 ministers call for foundational research to support AI breakthroughs

·1 min read

Ministers from almost all G20 countries agreed to push for investment in “foundational research” aimed at unlocking breakthroughs in emerging technologies, including AI. The agreement was included in a statement adopted by ministers from the bloc, which brings together established and emerging economies.

The statement followed a meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on 1‑2 September under the United States’ G20 presidency. Ministers also endorsed a lighter-touch approach to AI regulation, warning that rigid rules could stifle investment in the sector.
