Euro zone companies lean on cash for AI spending

·1 min read

Euro zone companies are largely funding AI investment with their own cash, reflecting financing barriers that set them apart from US tech groups borrowing heavily to expand. ECB data show 72% of firms plan to use internal funds such as cash flow or retained earnings for AI-related spending.

External financing is playing a limited role. Around 16% of firms plan to use bank loans, 6% mentioned equity and venture capital, and only 1% are considering debt securities. Over 80% of firms said they expect to rely on just a single financing instrument, predominantly internal funds.

The pattern points to potential structural challenges in the euro area’s financial ecosystem, especially for intangible investment. Companies are more likely to seek external funding for tangible assets such as hardware or data infrastructure because those assets can serve as collateral.
