EU selects Domyn-led consortium for open frontier AI model
The European Commission has chosen EUROPA, a consortium led by Italian company Domyn, to win the Frontier AI Grand Challenge and develop an open-source AI model for Europe. The model is expected to cover all 24 official EU languages and be made accessible to businesses, researchers and public institutions across the Union.
The competition was created to strengthen Europe’s ability to build advanced AI using its own infrastructure and talent. It invited European AI innovators to propose a model with more than 400 billion parameters, a scale associated with leading frontier systems, while supporting openness, trust and strategic autonomy.
The selected project will use EuroHPC computing resources and receive up to 2.5% of the overall EuroHPC computing capacity for one year on one or more AI-optimised EuroHPC supercomputers. The Commission expects the resulting open models to support public authorities, scientific communities and businesses, with potential applications in manufacturing, healthcare and autonomous systems.
