EU AI Act deadline exposes enterprise governance gaps

·1 min read

The EU AI Act is moving from policy discussion into operational implementation for enterprises that build, buy, deploy, or integrate AI systems connected to the European Union. The law entered into force on August 1, 2024, with requirements applying in phases, including general provisions, AI literacy obligations, and prohibited practices from February 2, 2025, and rules for general-purpose AI models from August 2, 2025.

Most remaining provisions become applicable on August 2, 2026, making readiness a near-term operational issue. High-risk systems may require risk management, data governance, technical documentation, logging, transparency, human oversight, accuracy, robustness, cybersecurity, post-market monitoring, and incident handling. The challenge for many organizations is not interpreting the law alone, but finding every AI system in use and proving that controls match actual workflows.

High-risk classification depends on intended use, context, users, and potential impact. Systems used in areas such as biometrics, critical infrastructure, education, employment, essential services, law enforcement, migration and border control, and administration of justice may carry heightened obligations. Vendor-provided AI adds exposure because enterprises may still be responsible for internal deployment, oversight, data handling, and workflow impact.

Effective preparation starts with an AI inventory, risk classification, role mapping, vendor review, data governance assessment, human oversight design, and documentation and monitoring workflows. Cross-functional coordination across legal, engineering, product, security, procurement, compliance, data, and business teams is central to making governance work in practice.
