Bupa uses AI to speed legacy app modernization
Bupa modernized the My Bupa mobile app after recognizing that Xamarin had become an end-of-life platform and Microsoft support for it ended sometime in 2024. The company moved the app to native Swift and Kotlin with Infosys, framing the work as a business transformation aimed at security, customer experience, and control over its roadmap.
The migration improved the app rating from 3.7 to 4.7, reduced the user-perceived crash rate by nearly 24 percentage points on Android and eight points on iOS, and restored Android login success per visit to 77%. Bupa also reached 100% feature parity in a single release, moved 90% of its active customer base to the new version, and reported nearly 1.8 million unique downloads.
Infosys used AI-assisted reverse engineering to extract flows, rules, and business logic from the legacy code, then applied forward engineering to rebuild the platform for stability and future change. The program was delivered in approximately 60% less time than would have happened in pre-AI era, while AI-driven discovery and documentation removed almost an estimated of 400 hours of manual BA effort.
Modern platforms were positioned as the foundation for personalized, predictive services, faster releases, accessibility testing, and agentic AI under governance and human oversight. Sherazi said the strategic question shifted from whether the platform can support an idea to whether it is right for customers.
