Brookhaven Lab awarded 7 DOE Genesis Mission projects

The U.S. Department of Energy selected 7 Brookhaven National Laboratory-led projects for funding through the Genesis Mission Phase I Request for Application, backing AI research across microelectronics, nuclear and high energy physics, computational science, and atmospheric science. The awards were announced at the Genesis Mission Summit in Washington, D.C., where Hendrik Hamann, Brookhaven’s chief AI scientist for Innovation, Science, and Security and a joint appointee at Stony Brook University, presented.

The Genesis Mission aims to build an integrated science discovery platform that combines AI, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments while bringing together government, industry, academia, and philanthropy. The Phase I awards are intended to identify promising paths toward transformative scientific capabilities and lay groundwork for future investment and scale, with teams designing workflows that pair AI with scientific investigation.

Brookhaven’s projects include an AI-controlled cloud chamber, multi-agent reinforcement learning for scientific hypothesis generation, agentic AI for quantum sensing, AI-native design tools for custom chips, collider computing infrastructure for AI-ready data, self-learning digital twins for particle accelerators, and composable foundation models for cross-domain reasoning. All 7 Brookhaven-led projects are supported by the DOE Office of Science, and the lab is also contributing to 29 additional projects led by other National Laboratories, research universities, and private industry.
