Battle.net adds UK age checks for social features

Blizzard is introducing online age verification for some Battle.net accounts in the UK, adding restrictions to social features for users who do not complete the process. The change follows the UK Online Safety Act, which has prompted platforms including Discord, PlayStation Network and Roblox to experiment with similar checks using systems such as Persona and ID.me.

Battle.net support guidance says age verification may be required for some accounts to comply with the law. Unverified accounts will have limited access to voice chat, text chat and other social interactions with people outside their friends list until verification is completed.

Users who do not verify that they are above 18 will lose access to certain Battle.net features, including social interactions and age-restricted content. The restrictions place Blizzard among a growing set of gaming and online communication services adjusting account controls in response to UK safety rules.
