Banks need adaptable systems for EU AI Act compliance

·1 min read

Banks preparing for the EU AI Act face a technology challenge that goes beyond meeting compliance deadlines. Responsible use of AI increasingly depends on explainability, accountability and human oversight, but those controls require infrastructure that can trace data provenance, system access and decision accountability as models become more capable.

The shift from generative tools to agentic AI raises the stakes. AI agents may investigate transactions, coordinate workflows and interact with multiple banking systems in real time, making deep audit trails, structured data access, APIs, orchestration and built-in human oversight essential. Legacy systems built around fragmented data, tightly coupled platforms or batch processes could limit adoption and turn innovation into a complex integration project.

A gradual modernization strategy is positioned as safer than a large core replacement. Running cloud-native and composable technology alongside existing infrastructure can improve data access and API-first services while reducing operational risk. Specialist technology partners may also help banks modernize at a sustainable pace and prepare for changing regulatory expectations.
