AspenTech combines AI and process simulation in hybrid models

AspenTech’s Aspen Hybrid Models combine first principles simulations, process data, domain expertise and AI to model complex processes and assets. The technology is designed to address problems that first principles models alone cannot easily solve, while helping engineers build predictive models faster and keep them aligned with plant performance.

Engineers can build and deploy models through Aspen AI Model Builder or directly within AspenTech’s process simulators. Applications include digital twins, refinery planning, process control and optimization. AspenTech says hybrid models provide a better representation of plant conditions, allowing them to remain relevant longer and reducing the effort needed to maintain accuracy.

The approach embeds industrial AI in Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS, combining empirical modeling with simulation and 40 years of domain expertise to support operational decisions. AspenTech positions the technology as a way to improve safety, sustainability and profitability across design, operations and maintenance. Hydrocarbon Processing named Aspen Hybrid Models “Best Modeling Technology” for 2021.
