AI shopping videos pressure TikTok Shop creators

·1 min read

Generative AI videos are starting to compete with TikTok Shop affiliates who specialize in shoppable clips built around flash sales, price drops, and product demos. Socialscale.ai founder Fabian Ouwehand compared the format to roadside billboards, and marketers said brands are using AI to recreate successful influencer posts or publish at high volume without paying creators or sending samples. TikTok’s GMV Max ad system is increasingly surfacing the clips, and an AI-video maker drove tens of thousands of dollars in product sales.

The shift is changing the marketplace, but the technology still risks backlash. Some synthetic influencers use unnatural voices or demonstrate products in ways that appear physically implausible, prompting users to call out AI-generated posts. Brands are split: some embrace AI when it lifts sales, while others fear reputational damage, and The Wall Street Journal recently reported that SharkNinja barred affiliate creators from using AI.

TikTok Shop’s growth makes quality control increasingly important. The marketplace launched in the US in 2023 and is tracking toward over $23 billion in US sales this year, while Amazon is projected to surpass $500 billion, according to EMARKETER. TikTok’s seller documentation allows generative AI if videos are labeled, avoid misrepresentation or impersonation, and respect intellectual property rights, but lawyers warn synthetic testimonials could create deception and compliance risks.
