AI pushes biology toward brute-force discovery

AI’s “bitter lesson,” articulated by computer scientist Richard Sutton in 2019, is increasingly shaping biology: human expertise can slow progress when systems become complex enough for powerful computers to find better answers. Biotech researchers are now applying that idea to drug discovery, where a new generation of therapies is emerging from large-scale data analysis rather than traditional hypothesis-driven science.

New methods using nanotechnology and AI can measure more aspects of human biology, including the thousands of proteins found in human blood. Better computational tools are turning those measurements into useful patterns, while humanoid robots with dexterous hands could automate lab tasks such as handling mice or slicing tissue. Labs could operate 24/7, making previously impractical experiments faster and cheaper.

Cloud labs may eventually let researchers use an AI chatbot to design studies and trigger real-world experiments. AI models could run physical experiments, analyze results and propose follow-up work in automated loops. The shift is expected to be strange and controversial, particularly around animal studies, but it could also accelerate lifesaving discoveries.
