AI agents help steer Allen Telescope Array in SETI search
The Allen Telescope Array in Hat Creek, California, is now partly operated by AI agents searching for potential extraterrestrial signals. Breakthrough Listen and the SETI Institute are integrating the software into daily operations, allowing researchers to steer the instrument, enhance and correct incoming data, and apply detection models through a single natural-language request.
NVIDIA’s Holoscan platform processes sensor data in real time and feeds it to the agents as observations arrive. The workflow connects control of the 42-dish array with data preparation and analysis, rather than leaving those tasks for processing after collection.
The approach also reflects a longstanding SETI hypothesis: signals from a technologically advanced civilization could be generated or managed by machines rather than biological beings. Beyond the search itself, agent-based control offers a potential model for laboratories managing complex instruments with limited staff. It also raises questions about data integrity and whether a language model might interpret an ambiguous research request differently from the astronomer who issued it.
