Reddit plans login requirement to protect its data

·1 min read

Reddit plans to put its data behind a login requirement as AI-powered search changes how people access information online. CEO Steve Huffman outlined the approach during a Q&A session following the company’s Q3 2026 financial results. The move signals a shift in Reddit’s relationship with Google, whose AI Overview has driven traffic to the discussion platform in a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Huffman described web search as evolving from a gateway to other websites into an AI-powered destination in its own right. He acknowledged the usefulness of AI search but said it serves a different purpose from Reddit, lacking the context, nuance and human interaction that support community, connection and belonging. He identified logged-in users and app users as Reddit’s most valuable audience and its primary focus.
