UK backs biosecurity lab in AI security funding package

·1 min read

The UK government announced around £600 million in AI-related funding on Oct. 24, including £100 million in public funding for a planned AI Biosecurity Lab. The lab will initially focus on detecting emerging biological threats earlier and accelerating the development of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures. These remain announced goals, not demonstrated results.

OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits, alongside trusted access to relevant models through its Rosalind Biodefense programme. Anthropic will contribute up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and technical support. The combined commitment is worth up to £200 million, but does not represent additional public cash funding. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research are slated to contribute through research collaborations and AI-for-science tools rather than equivalent credit commitments.

The wider package includes £65 million for countermeasures against pathogens, an extra £120 million for the existing AI Security Institute and £130 million for cyber-defense projects. A £70 million National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability centre falls within the cyber allocation, rather than adding to it. The Cabinet Office says the biosecurity lab will operate as an independent nonprofit, with details of its scientific advisory committee to be announced later.
