EU publishes first harmonised standard under AI Act

·1 min read

The European Commission published EN 18286:2026 in the Official Journal on October 19, establishing the first harmonised standard under the AI Act. Providers implementing it receive a presumption of conformity with the Article 17 quality management requirements covered by the standard. The publication is backed by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/2274.

Developed by CEN and CENELEC, the standard is organised around the AI system lifecycle rather than the organisation. It is designed to complement existing management frameworks, including ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 9001 and sector-specific systems such as ISO 13485, rather than replace them. Providers in regulated sectors can integrate management systems instead of operating separate ones.

The Commission described the publication as an important implementation milestone ahead of the application of requirements for high-risk AI systems, with further harmonised standards expected to follow. Separately, the AI Office opened its first AI Act probes into OpenAI and Anthropic earlier this month.
