Meta launches Mac model as chip restrictions and market concerns grow

·1 min read

Meta has launched MuseSpark Open, an AI model designed to run locally on Macs, with 816 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window. It targets complex coding, automated tasks and video editing workflows, but requires at least 1 terabyte of RAM to run locally. Amazon has also introduced Bee devices that listen to conversations and help users organize their lives, raising privacy concerns.

Taiwan is preparing stricter controls on AI chip exports to China to align with US policies, with implications for global AI infrastructure. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has called for US-China dialogue over potentially dangerous AI risks as competition between the countries continues.

Financial pressure is also building. A CoreWeave selloff has intensified concerns about major AI companies’ valuations and financial health. Shares in Nvidia, AMD and Micron have fallen amid questions about high development costs and investment returns.

Beyond consumer devices and chip markets, AI tools are helping smallholder farmers in Rwanda, Ghana and Morocco improve yields and address food security. Businesses are adopting digital twins for productivity and learning, while confronting questions about ownership and continued use after employees leave.
