QualCoder 4.0 adds an AI agent and expanded research tools

·1 min read

QualCoder 4.0, released October 4, 2026, expands the free, open-source qualitative data analysis software with an AI agent that can perform actions within the application rather than only respond in chat. The release also broadens model options. Users can inspect and modify the prompts behind AI features, choose among models or integrate their own.

Research workflow updates include nested code hierarchies, improved PDF rendering and graph linkages designed for grounded theory and other inductive approaches. A new survey import wizard supports classifying attributes to files or codes, while expanded Mark Speakers options add regular expressions and other patterns for automatic coding, including use with PDFs. Zotero reference integration allows PDF and EPUB files to be imported with an RIS file and automatically linked to bibliographic data.

QualCoder runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with tools for coding text, images, audio and video, querying SQL databases, and producing reports and visualizations. Additional changes support saving and reloading table settings and attribute filters. Temple University Libraries provides tutorials, installation guidance and demonstrations covering manual coding, automatic coding, AI assistance and survey workflows.
