CNN signs multiyear content deal with Google

·1 min read

CNN has agreed to a multiyear partnership granting Google enhanced content rights for experimental AI product features. Announced on October 15, the arrangement provides compensation for use of CNN’s journalism. Neither company has disclosed financial terms, identified the Google products involved or clarified whether the agreement covers model training or only retrieval and display.

The network joins Google’s existing AI news pilot alongside publishers including Der Spiegel, El País, The Guardian, The Times of India, The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post. CNN’s senior vice president of strategic partnerships and business development, Sam Felix, described the partnership as a way to expand audience access while securing payment for its intellectual property.

The deal addresses a central concern for publishers: AI-generated search summaries can answer questions without sending readers to news sites, potentially reducing advertising impressions and direct audience relationships. How prominently CNN attribution and links will appear, how outdated or inaccurate summaries will be corrected, and whether the features will generate visits remain publicly unresolved. CNN is also suing Perplexity AI over alleged unauthorized use of its journalism after licensing talks failed, pairing negotiated access with legal action against unlicensed use.
