Trump plans AI Force while dismissing AI fears
President Donald Trump said he would create an “AI Force” and appoint an AI czar in the near future, framing the move as a way to monitor harmful aspects of AI while still encouraging industry growth. He again dismissed concerns about AI alignment as a “hoax” and said the U.S. would not hinder or stifle the sector.
The scope of the proposed AI Force remains unclear. Trump compared the idea to Space Force, which is under the Department of Defense and was created by an act of Congress as a new military branch in 2020. Any comparable armed forces branch would require congressional action, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The announcement follows warnings from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about the risks of AI development outpacing alignment and monitoring. David Sacks, co-chair of Trump’s science and technology council, also argued that the U.S. already has extensive laws, regulations and agencies that can apply to AI.
