AI industry faces $6 trillion revenue test, Bain says
Bain & Co. estimates the global AI industry must generate $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to justify the capital flowing into data centers worldwide. Existing consumer and enterprise AI services may produce as much as $1.8 trillion, leaving $4.2 trillion in new revenue that would need to come from emerging areas such as autonomous machines, robotics, drug discovery, mental health and energy generation.
The consultancy said AI infrastructure is being built ahead of demand, with sustainable funding requiring approximately 1% to be added to annual global GDP growth. Microsoft Corp., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc. and Oracle Corp. are among the companies investing heavily as demand for computing resources rises.
Bain projects $5 trillion to $6.5 trillion in data-center spending by 2030, adding at least 150 gigawatts of capacity and increasing pressure on energy systems. Data center sizes and costs are doubling roughly every 12 to 16 months, while annual AI infrastructure spending may reach as much as $1.5 trillion by 2031. Developers also face shortages of transformers, water and power, along with local opposition that blocked or delayed $68 billion worth of US projects in the June quarter.
