Sarawak official urges clearer rules for AI content rights

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Abdullah Saidol called for clearer laws on ownership and royalties for content created partly or entirely with AI, saying current copyright rules mainly cover human-created works. Speaking at the inaugural Sarawak Media Workshop 2026 in Kuching, he questioned how rights should apply when a song, drama, montage or short video is created using 60 per cent AI or 100 per cent AI.

Abdullah said broader concerns around altered material, intellectual property and responsible content creation are becoming more urgent as AI spreads through journalism, public relations and creative work. He urged media practitioners to understand the technology and said the proposed Sarawak AI association could support the state’s digital efforts and help improve public understanding of AI and the digital economy, including in rural communities.

The workshop drew about 150 participants and covered online safety, Sarawak storytelling, modern photojournalism and mobile journalism. Abdullah said future sessions could be simplified and taken to rural areas from Lundu to Lawas, where residents are increasingly interested in using digital platforms to market products and improve livelihoods.
