Anthropic runs AI-guided biology lab amid bioweapon warnings

·1 min read

Anthropic has been operating an autonomous biology wet lab in the Bay Area, where Claude is being used to coordinate robotic lab assistants for science experiments with minimal human intervention, according to Reuters. The company confirmed the lab’s existence through Eric Kauderer-Abrams, its head of life sciences, who said real lab work remains the final test for doing biology.

The project appears aimed at early biotech and possible drug development work, though Anthropic told Reuters the lab is not specifically pursuing drug discovery and declined to provide details. Kauderer-Abrams said the work does not diverge from “what you would see in most biotech companies” and described AI-driven lab automation as being in its early stages.

The disclosure follows Anthropic’s recent warnings about Claude users seeking help with suspicious biological research and CEO Dario Amodei’s public concerns about AI-assisted “bioterrorism.” The overlap between pharmaceutical research tools and potentially dangerous biological applications remains a central concern, with MIT synthetic biologist Kevin Esvelt warning that an AI chatbot recently suggested to him “a novel form of bioweapon” he had not realized was possible.
