Emerald AI, Google and NVIDIA form grid-focused data center alliance
Emerald AI, Google and NVIDIA have launched the AI Energy Management Alliance, a coalition focused on data centers that can dynamically manage electricity use in response to grid conditions. The group’s goal is to help AI infrastructure connect to the power system more quickly while supporting reliability, affordability and more efficient use of existing grid capacity.
The alliance is built around technology-neutral, performance-based requirements. Its work will focus on measurable capabilities such as response speed, duration, predictability and behavior during emergencies, rather than prescribing specific hardware or software. Flexible data centers could shift computing workloads, discharge storage, use paired generation or reduce demand when the grid is under stress.
AEMA plans to define ride-through, curtailment and contingency-response obligations before facilities connect, standardize technical requirements and operational data sharing, and create faster, risk-adjusted pathways for customers with verifiable flexibility commitments. It will also examine interconnection cost allocation based on actual system impacts and benefits.
The coalition will bring together AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, technology companies, power producers, utilities and regional grid operators. AEMA will work with utilities on interconnection models and advocate for policies that recognize grid-responsive demand across the U.S.
